Our aim is first to guide and correct. We use a fair, three-step process: a verbal warning, then a written warning, and — only if needed — removal from the program. Serious breaches may move straight to removal. The final decision rests with Greentalist staff, and anyone required to leave is responsible for their own onward travel costs.

Greentalist is an alcohol-free program. The rule exists for safety: we often work in remote areas where emergency services are limited, and alcohol increases the risk of accidents and poor decisions. A clear head keeps you and your team safe — and as a representative of Greentalist and your country, you're expected to uphold the highest standards of conduct.

Using, possessing, buying, sharing, or supplying illegal drugs — including marijuana — is strictly forbidden. It may lead to immediate removal from the program and to legal consequences under Costa Rican law. This protects the health and safety of everyone, and the integrity of our mission.

We encourage you to limit personal device use during placements — to stay present, protect your belongings, and respect the communities we visit, some of which are remote. In some placements, social media posting may be restricted. Program staff will give you clear guidance on communication access, and you're asked not to use or share devices without permission.

Child safety is a priority. We apply rigorous health & safety protocols, trained staff, and thorough risk assessments at every site, with regular briefings and emergency, Medevac, and Casevac plans in place. Following Costa Rican child protection laws, Greentalist reports any inappropriate behavior — or suspicion of it — between adults and minors to the relevant authority. Our commitment is zero tolerance for violence, exploitation, and abuse of children.

Yes — though rarely, and never lightly. In serious cases of breaching the Code of Conduct, we carefully weigh personal responsibility, the team's well-being, and the impact on the host community. Our priority is always a safe, respectful, and positive experience for everyone.

We strongly discourage smoking and vaping. Our projects take place in smoke-free settings such as schools, national parks, and community centers, and participants can't leave group areas alone to smoke, as that creates safety risks. Smoking may also affect how local partners view the participant and their country. We recommend limiting or quitting before joining.

We care deeply about participant well-being, but we are not a clinical or therapeutic organization. Our staff are trained to manage group dynamics, reduce stress, and de-escalate conflict as first responders to low-level challenges — they are not licensed mental health professionals. When significant distress arises, staff connect participants with local resources or, if needed, recommend an early departure for safety. We strongly encourage families to share any pre-existing mental health concerns during the application, so we can prepare the right support.
